The Certamen Petronianum II is the highest profile literary competition of Nova Roma, organized by the aedilis plebis A. Iulius Paterculus, with renowned international award-winning author, writer and poet Jo Walton as the chair of the contest Jury. Our previous Certamen Petronianum was presided by famous Roman novel author Dr. Colleen McCullough and Roman history scholar and author Prof. Dr. Peter Wiseman. Our current edition honors the memory of our previous jury member Colleen McCullough who deceased this year.

For legal purposes, a Sestertius Signum, like any Nova Roma coin is a trade token for use within Nova Roma, not an attempt to undermine the common currency of any macronation.

Nova Roma sets the redemption value of this first issue Sestertius Signum at 50 US cents (or the equivalent in other currencies). Nova Roma guarantees to redeem this coin at this value so that they may be used as trade coinage at events, within NR Provinciae, trade with Ordo Equester vendors and more. Coins that have been deliberately defaced or altered are non-redeemable. No other coin issued by Nova Roma is redeemable in any amount or in any currency.

  • Obverse device: Seated figure of Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, holding Winged Victory..

  • Thickness: 2.25mm.
  • Edge: Plain.
  • Material: Brass.
  • Year minted: Fr. Apulo C. Laenate cos. MMDCCLVIII a.u.c. (designed and minting ordered by the senate in that year, but it was struck and distribution started in the first months C. Buteone Po. Minucia cos. MMDCCLIX a.u.c.).
  • Quantity minted: 5000 circulation coins, 250 proofs.
  • Obverse legend: "SESTERTIVS" In exergue "NOVA•ROMA".
  • Reverse legend: "FR•APVLO•C•LAENATE•COS".
  • Reverse device: Iuppiter driving quadriga with Victory.
  • Note: First in the "Capitolium" series. Proofs are in plastic capsules.
