PREVIOUS YEARS
There is no certified information at this point, but research made by pontifex Cn. Lentulus about the past calendars and Nundinal letters of Nova Roma indicate that the Nundinal letters for previous years were the following:
- Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. ‡ MMDCCLI a.u.c.. The Nundinal letter was F. Source: http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/1999/1999-03-30.html
- L. Equitio Dec. Iunio cos. ‡ MMDCCLII a.u.c.. The Nundinal letter was HGA. The year started mistakenly as H, then it seems to have continued incorrectly as G, and was finally amended to the correct A. Sources: http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/1999/1999-03-30.html, http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/1999/1999-08-13.html and http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/1999/1999-09-13.html Later in the year, the incorrect H was possibly corrected to an equally incorrect G (source: https://web.archive.org/web/19990210165240/http://novaroma.org/), then to the truly correct A (as shown here: https://web.archive.org/web/19991007163010/http://novaroma.org/main.html).
- Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c.. A bissextile (or leap) year. The Nundinal letter was HC or AC.The year started mistakenly as either H or A, depending on how the bissextile day was lettered back then (source: https://web.archive.org/web/20000302214803/http://www.novaroma.org/main.html), but it was changed to C at least from April (source: http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/2000/2000-04-03.html and https://web.archive.org/web/20000512015917/http://www.novaroma.org/main.html), probably continuing the mistaken H of last year, or perhaps resuming the correct calculation including the bissextile switch. It should have correctly started as D if it had continued the correct A for last year, and since it was a leap year, a switch should have occurred from D to C after the day a.d. bis VI Kal. Mar., or from C to B if we calculate it from a pre-switch C deriving from the incorrect H for last year.
- Fl. Vedio (II) M. Cassio (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLIV a.u.c.. The Nundinal letter was C, breaking the cycle. It should have been F from C, or, less correctly, E from B. Source: http://www.novaroma.org/bin/calendar/cal?cmd=showmonth&month=9&year=2001 Another source described that this new cycle was purposedly intruduced and was derived as counted from the Declaration Day, pridie Kal. Mar. of 1998, through a virtual sequences 1998 C, 1999 F, 2000 AH, 2001 C: http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/2001/2001-10-19.html
- M. Octavio L. Sulla (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLV a.u.c.. The Nundinal letter was F, with regular continuance from the C of last year. It should have been A from F, or, less correctly, H from E. Source: http://www.novaroma.org/forum/mainlist/2002/2002-12-01.html
- K. Buteone T. Labieno cos. ‡ MMDCCLVI a.u.c.. The Nundinal letter can not be found for this year. The regular continuance would have been A from F, but it should have been D from A, which is the most correct lineage. There is a third possibility, C from H, which seems likely because the next year is F.
- Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. ‡ MMDCCLVII a.u.c.. A bissextile (or leap) year. The Nundinal letter was marked F (but was technically FE). It is not marked in our source, but the Nundinae must have had to fall on E after the day a.d. bis VI Kal. Mar.. The next year (marked H instead of A) certainly shows that this switch was observed. Source: http://www.novaroma.org/bin/calendar/cal?cmd=showmonth&month=1&year=2004
- Fr. Apulo C. Laenate cos. ‡ MMDCCLVIII a.u.c.. The Nundinal letter was H, with regular continuance from the FE of last year. Source: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Nova-Roma/conversations/messages/36798
From 2004, the Nova Roman Nundinae continue an unbroken regular cycle. If we calculated backwards from this well established cycle that has been going on from 2004 to 2017, the result for the years prior 2004 would look the following:
- 1998 - E (it was F actually) -1 day difference from the original Nova Roman Nundinal cycle.
- 1999 - H (it was briefly H, as HGA actually) -1 day difference at least from the original Nova Roman Nundinal cycle.
- 2000 - CB (it was HC or AC actually, but should have been DC) -1 day difference at least from the original Nova Roman Nundinal cycle.
- 2001 - E (it was C actually) +2 days difference from the actual, and +1 day difference from the original Nova Roman Nundinal cycle (which should have been F). The cycle was then restarted as if 1998 had been C.
- 2002 - H (it was F actually) +2 days difference from the actual, and +1 day difference from the original Nova Roman Nundinal cycle (which should have been A).
- 2003 - C (unknown)
- 2004 - FE - in regular continuance up to 2017.
We can conclude that there have been 3 Nundinal cycles started within Nova Roma: the first in 1998, the second in 2001 and the third sometime around 2003-2004. The sequence of Nundinal letters for the 3 systems is the following:
Year | 1st cycle started in 1998 |
2nd cycle started in 2001 |
3rd cycle started in 2004 |
What it was recorded |
1998 | F | C | E | F |
1999 | A | F | H | HGA |
2000 | DC | AH | CB | HC/AC |
2001 | F | C | E | C |
2002 | A | F | H | F |
2003 | D | A | C | - |
2004 | GF | DC | FE | F |
2005 | A | F | H | H |
2006 | D | A | C | C |
2007 | G | D | F | F |
2008 | BA | GF | AH | A |
2009 | D | A | C | C |
2010 | G | D | F | F |
