Publius Claudius Caecus

P. Claudius Caecus, initially known as Amulius Claudius Petrus, became a citizen in Fl. Vedio (II) M. Cassio (II) cos. MMDCCLIV a.u.c. and is one of the patricians of Nova Roma.

P. Caecus is a sodalis Palatinus within the public priesthood of Nova Roma.[1]


As aedilis curulis in M. Octavio L. Sulla (II) cos. MMDCCLV a.u.c., he was the first magistrate of the modern era to organize formal online events to celebrate the ludi. Since this time online celebration of the ludi has become a common method of celebrating within Nova Roma.[2] [3]


P. Claudius Caecus was also the first webmaster for the province of Canada Citerior. He served in this capacity as scriba to Propraetor Po. Minucia Strabo.[4]


During the years of K. Buteone T. Labieno cos. MMDCCLVI a.u.c. and Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. MMDCCLVII a.u.c. P. Caecus took a leave of absence from Nova Roma to focus on his studies. During this time he contributed to Nova Roma as a private citizen when possible. [5]


P. Claudius Caecus is a practicing physician and holds a medical doctorate and is a current master of education candidate. Prior to this he first obtained a bachelor of medical science with a minor in ancient history. Within his history related studies he has written academic manuscripts on the role of religion in ancient Greek and Roman medicine which have been published in the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences. His main academic focus in this area has been the cult of Asclepius and Galenic medicine as practiced during the imperial era.

P. Claudius Caecus has been continuously involved in academic activity related to ancient Roman history:

  • Organized fundraisers outside of Nova Roma to raise funds to excavate and protect the "Villa of the Papyri" in Herculaneum. K. Buteone Po. Minucia cos. MMDCCLIX a.u.c.
  • Conducted field research in Campania as a summer student at the University of Naples focusing on the cult of Asclepius and Galenic practice of Medicine in the ancient world. L. Arminio Ti. Galerio cos. MMDCCLX a.u.c.
  • Completed field work in Crete and Turkey researching early public health infrastructure during the 5th and 6th centuries. Cn. Caesare C. Tullio cos. MMDCCLXV a.u.c.
