Britannia

Nova Roma

Britannia provincia is a province of Nova Roma, covering the British Isles, Great Britain and Ireland, the macronational countries of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. There was a separate province for Ireland, Provincia Hibernia, but it was disbanded due to inactivity and the territory was merged with Provincia Britannia. Hibernia can, at any time, become its own province again if the local citizens will reach the level of organization and activity that is needed for a province.

Cn. Cornelius Lentulus, the temporary legatus pro praetore (governor) of Provincia Britannia and dux of the Dioecesis of Europa Celtica et Germanica (Britannia, Gallia, Germania and Thule) was chosen by the senate, due to his successful work in revitalizing other inactive subdivisions of Nova Roma, and has been given the task to put back Britannia to its feet. For a long while, due to its inactivity, our Britannia province was organizationally joined up with the provinces of Gallia, Germania, Thule and Hispania, and was part of the temporary umbrella unit of the Dioecesis Europae Celticae et Germanicae, which was put under Cn. Lentulus' responsibility as its dux. His task was to reorganize these provinces, and to give them back to local leaders as soon as possible. With the vital and substantial help of his quaestor, and later proquaestor, C. Petronius Stephanus Turpilianus, the legatus pro praetore Cn. Lentulus succeeded, and the Senate re-established Britannia as a full province on Kal. Iun. ‡ M. Cotta C. Petronio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXVII a.u.c..

The newly reformed Provincia Britannia was put in the command of the year's consul and local citizen, the same C. Petronius Stephanus Turpilianus.

Britannia is one of the gems of Nova Roma: there were two International Grand Conventuses of Nova Roma organized here, and several smaller international conventions, consular meetings and similar. We had an active Latin speaking community in London led by world class Latin activist, A. Gratius Avitus, our former citizen, and one of the best theoreticians of Nova Roma, A. Apollonius Cordus was also part of this province, making Britannia a center of the theory of Roman reconstructionism. We have several of the greatest citizens, many reenactors, magistrates or former magistrates, talent and manpower in our hands. Provincia Britannia is one of the centers of Roman revivalism in Nova Roma, with its own real reconstructed Roman fortress, Castra Ovum.

Provincial legions

Nova Roma has one official legion at the moment in Provincia Britannia, the allied Legio XX Valeria Victrix, commanded by praefectus A. Ocratius Maximus Gittus.

Projects and partnerships

The most important project of two Nova Roman Provincia Britannia is the Castra Ovum, an authentic Roman fortress that is currently being built and developed by our Legio XX Valeria Victrix Britannica. This fortress will serve as the center of Roman activities and reconstructionism in Brtain, and a cohesive focal point of our province:
