C. Equitius Cato was a consular senator of Nova Roma, one of the most popular public figures and best orators in a time. He became famous for his daily calendar posts about Roman religion and history, and was generally acclaimed for his sense of humor and respect for the mos maiorum. With A. Apollonius Cordus, he was one of the most vocal proponents of the abolition of a formal "constitution" from Nova Roman law on the model of ancient Roman practice.

From Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. MMDCCLVII a.u.c. he served as legate in the province of Mediatlantica, which was the start of his public service, following by the quaestorship shortly, and rising successfully to aedilis and praetor, reaching the pinnacle of his popularity.

His Nova Roman political career took a controversial turn after M. Moravio T. Iulio cos. MMDCCLXI a.u.c.. C. Equitius provided substantial help and support to Cn. Iulius Caesar, L. Cornelius Sulla Felix as one of the so called "Sullans" or "Back Alley Faction", helping Caesar and Sulla to rise to absolute power through a series of internal conflicts that is referred to as the Second "Civil War" of Nova Roma, transpiring between M. Curiatio M. Iulio cos. MMDCCLXII a.u.c. - P. Memmio K. Buteone (II) cos. MMDCCLXIII a.u.c.. After their victory, Cato was first to receive the consulship, followed the next year by Caesar, and then by Sulla. After his consulship, C. Equitius Cato retired from Nova Roman politics.
