Censores are very respected magistrates with the highest auctoritas to safeguard the public morality and honour but third in rank after the consules and praetores. because they do not possess the imperium, and have no power to convene either the senate or an assembly of the people. Their principal duty is to maintain the lists of citizens, equestrians and senators.
To stand for election as censor, a potential candidate is required to be at least 27 years old as of the effective date of office, must already have served at least six months as a consul, praetor, aedilis, quaestor, tribunus plebis, magister aranearius (formerly curator araneae), editor commentariorum (formerly curator differum), rogator, or provincial governor and must be assiduus.
